Windows Millennium

Anybody out there using Windows Millennium?

I am still trying to resolve slow typing/erratic mouse problems - I was successful in getting the disk defragmenter to work, so I think I can eliminate that as a cause.

Someone suggested that the battery in my PC might be getting low. I tried to look into this using the help function on the PC, but I don't seem to have the correct options - the help page tells me to click "Power Options" then on either the "Power Meter" or "Alarms" tab - only problem is - I have neither of these tabs!!

Words of wisdom, anyone?

Hi the battery is the coin type resides in the motherboard within the case. They usually last 2-4 years and aint expensive a pound or two to replace and take less than 5 minutes. I got my last one from Boots

    Hi there,
for the mouse problem. have you tried cleaning the rollers inside the mouse?
Key board - try start, settings, control panel, keyboard and check the settings.

  • Thaks folks - I have the cleanest ball and rollers in the county (!), we have anti-virus software, spyware software and a firewall set to "paranoid". No strange settings in the keyboard or mouse set-ups.

Must be the battery - unless anybody knows differently? Are there any disasters awaiting amateur battery replacers like me? Loss of all data/ programmes etc? If the battery is not there to safeguard data or software, what is it for?

You might loose the settings (cant remember of hand what button it is) in the bios so if unsure go into the bios and write down the settings can take a while to do.

    Hi,

I might suggest you click on Start - Run and type in 'MSCONFIG.' (sans quotes).

This will bring up a panel and if you go to STARTUP you will see ticked, all of the progs that run when you start the machine and continue running throughout.

You only NEED Explorer and Systray to run and could untick the rest.

You can always re-tick the items that you want to run after eliminating the posibvle cause of your problem if this works for you.

You could try the less efficient Control/Alt/Delete combination and Select and END-TASK on the programs that you dont need to see if that improves things.
It also wouldn't hurt to download a copy of Iola's SYSTEM MECANIC or similar and run this. It will deal with a lot of clutter problems.

Incidentally, talking of clutter - I assume that you empty the trash can regularly.:)

    Hope these ideas help,
