Can she get housing benefit?

Evening all,
I have a relative (by my ex marriage). She is 23, healthy, no children, no addictions, from the UK.
in a nutshell, she doesn't like to work. But enough said about that the better.
She is claiming jobseekers allowance (I think she gets about £138 per fortnight). She is also living between relatives and friends.
She has just said that it is now my turn to put her up! I don't think so. I told my ex that surely she is entitled to housing benefit if she gets her own place and a landlord that accepts DSS???? he days no, she has asked and isn't entitled to anything.
Who is right please?

If she is renting then she can claim LHA (replacement for housing benefit) The amount depends on the levels payable in her area-check the council website for details.
Sounds like she doesnt want the responsibility though
  • if she can find a place , and by that i mean pay a deposit sign the forms ,go through the checks , get the keys and move in .
then she will get the rent paid while she is out of work , i am pretty sure that there are limits , ie she could only rent a 1 bed flat and it would have to be under a certain theshold for rent , but it is totally possible.
to get the deposit i think the dole office will give her a loan or grant , not hard .
the problem you may have is that she is so lazy she will not even be bothered to fill out any forms as you will put her up , you may have to hold her hand all the way through and even fill out the forms for her , but shes your family
my favourite food is spare ribs
  • Can't help with the actual question but...
She has just said that it is now my turn to put her up! I don't think so.

Tell her to go and do one.
  • It's been a while since I worked for Housing Benefits but I can see no reason why she couldn't claim though being under 25 does limit the amount she would be eligible for.

    Just found this:

"If you are single & under 25 you will usually only be entitled to the LHA rate for a room in shared accommodation, even if you live in a self contained property.
This is called a 'shared rate' and is based on properties where the tenant has exclusive use of only one bedroom and where a kitchen, a bathroom, a toilet or a living room are being shared."

LHA stands for Local Housing Allowance
  • Thanks peeps.
I have told her and her family (remember I am only linked to her via my ex husband- his daughter you see), to 'do one'.
I've tried so hard with her but she's just a waste of space to be honest.
And yes she is so useless and lazy she won't fill out the forms herself. She lays in bed til 2pm then gets up, smokes many 'Fahgs' whilst sprawled on the sofa playing on her Blackberry phone, joining useless groups on Facebook!
The reason why I'm not switching off because this is now affecting the maintenance my ex pays to me for our three young kids (eldest is 5).
He is now saying that he needs to pay her rent/food etc thus reducing his payments to me! Yes I do work and have a mortgage but things are still tight.
Grrrrr. Makes me cross. I'm 39 and worked my entire life and little scamps lime this get an easy ride. Rant over.
  • Thankyou MadameCholet.
We posted at the same time.
I had no idea what LHA meant.
  • I don't see how your ex can possibly justify paying you less support for your non working age children when this person is obviously perfectly able to get a job if she put her mind to it.

He's not paying the money for you, it's so that his children can have a roof over their heads, food on the table etc. If your ex choses to spend his spare money supporting her then fine, but it shouldn't be at the expense of younger children for whom he is also responsible and who are clearly not in a position (at 5) to look for work.

Aren't they addictions? You state in your first post she has no addictions...:D

When I say addictions I mean illegal drugs and alcohol. Apparently of she had either of these addictions she would be given a flat (??!!!).
Thanks for your help everyone. Ill pass the information on and stand my ground.
