Nhs prepayment card

I applied during my first year but they said I can't because my student loan is £2,000 a term (before I went on my year in industry) which leaves me with £800 a term after paying rent which apparently makes me flush enough to afford prescriptions! Unfortunately in reality it doesn't work like that all. (£200 - £233 a month does NOT cover my outgoings let alone prescriptions) but I figure if they wouldn't give it to me the they definitely won't give it to me now I have p/t employment. I was awarded free wigs though should I never need one on the NHS!
I wish it was like Wales where you get free prescriptions until 25 because I think 16 - 25 is a period lots of people struggle with money because they haven't quite fine tuned their budgetting/money managing skills and you don't have the experience and qualifications to potentially get a very well paid job but ho hum, that's a discussion for a different day.
Actually hun, its free prescriptions for ALL residents of Wales - any age! its not means tested either!0 -
I discovered this a couple of years ago and it's saved us a fortune - DH is on about 5 - 6 different tablets daily so have save a lot of money. I've always gone for the lump sum payment, purely because it's out of the way then and I don't have to worry about it coming out of the bank each month.0

You can also buy a 3 month card for shorter periods of ill health. The card can be backdated too so as long as you ask for an 'NHS receipt' when you pay for the prescription you can hang onto the receipts and if you end up having a few prescriptions you can start the card from the day you paid for the first prescription (you can backdate the card up to 30 days). You apply for the card online and when it comes through just take the card and NHS receipts back to the pharmacy where you get a refund on the charges paid.

A warning here.... I signed up for my latest NHS Prepayment Certificate in February last year, paying 10 installments of £10.40 monthly by Direct Debit. All was fine until after the last payment in November. Randomly since then, and without renewing (or auto-renewal, which I don't recall as an option), further payments were taken on 26th January, 1st and 28th March this year. Not even regular!
I'll be following up with the NHS Business Services Authority which manages the scheme.0 -
I was recently ill and given a prescription for three items and it was £21.60. I asked for a receipt and claim back form then i applied online for a three month card for £28.25. I did back date it to my three prescription date.
I went to boots and they then reimbursed me the £21.60.
I have since had 4 prescriptions in 4 weeks. so it was definately worth the money.0 -
I've spent the last three months staring at the 2 blue circles spinning round on my sky+HD box thinking, that's a clever design...how cool! My wife, who cleans and polishes every day has been in Tenerife for the last 10 days and is due home tomorrow, so I decided to clean and polish for her coming home, only to discover that there is only one blue circle and I'm suffering from double vision.... I have a Pre Pay Cert, will this cover the cost of my eye test???0
