  • I would make a point of getting out for a couple of hours, regardless of the weather! I take the little boy I look after out every day, Rain is just weather, we are not made of sugar so won't melt! We jump in puddles and such like, he loves it! When its hot I often work an ice-cream stop to the route, and hot chocolate when its cold. I let him help choose the food we buy for dinner, etc etc. At that age everything is still new and everyday tasks can be very exciting with just a little thought.

Enjoy it, she wont be little very long.

cornflour and water is great - very messy but not hard to clean up

playdough can be made easily with ingredients from the cupboard. salt dough too

gardening? my ds was12months last year when helped to plant tomatoes.

helping you prep dinner for that night or do some baking. vegetable sitr fry is quick and easy and can be eaten straight away

perhaps it would be a good idea for her to bring a few toys from home everyday to sit and play with for a while.

if they are into drawing then go in the garden and do things like bark rubbings etc. a bit more interesting than just drawing

Going for a nice walk; perhaps ending up at your local park is always good.

Playing outside in the garden, collecting different leaves, and looking at all the activity, ie: insects, birds, etc.

    All craft activities.

    Cooking.
  • My youngest loves going to the garden centre with my mum. No one else in the world is allowed to take him there, it's their place. As is the coffee shop in the local Waitrose (Granny can afford Waitrose).

My point is that having a special place the two of you go to sometimes is to the child the most special thing in world, like having a special secret! So try and find something different to do that she doesn't do with her mum.
  • Your local SureStart centres will have activites for the under 5 almost every day.

Also, speak to your local council's Family Information Service and ask if they could email you a list of all your local playgroups. I got a list of every playgroup in the whole borough off of them - I was spoilt for choice!!
