Redundancy and Jobseekers Allowance

Can anyone help with this one?
My son has just been made redundant out of the blue with a 2 year old and a baby on the way so income is a priority!
His company are giving him the minimum redundancy payment plus two months salary as a sum. He says that because they are giving him two months salary in the sum, he will not be allowed contribution jobseekers allowance until the two months are up. I see it as part of the total redundancy package and believe he could be claiming the allowance straightway. An answer to this one would be very gratefully received!!

The rules have changed. previously, any payments in respect of the end of employment such as pay in lieu of notice or untaken holiday pay used to disqualify a claimant for the equivalent period, though statutory redundancy pay was not taken into account in this way. Since October 2009 (I think) the holiday or pay in lieu is ignored as income. However if he makes a claim for income based JSA, and the money from his company in total is over £6000 when added to any other capital/savings he and his partner have, the amount he would get may be reduced.0
