Daughter Passport Renewal after 5 years

Can anyone help?
We are about to change my daughters passport as she has had it 5 years and that is what they ask you to do. Now my wife said well that's another xxx pound which I thought was out of order as we are paying twice. Now having checked the web and passport section it is not clear if i have to pay again or not.
She was issued the passport over 5 years ago and there is something about extension being free but it does not make clear.
HELP!!!!!!!!!!! Do we have to pay again or not. If we do it makes a child passport more expensive than an adult one.
Thanks

The extension is granted where you renew a passport that hasn't expired yet.
So I've just renewed DS's passport, which was due to expire in August this year (to comply with visa requirements for a school trip). For my £49 fee I've been given a passport which expires in August 2016-a free extension of the six months his old passport had to run.import this0 -
Any passport renewed before it runs out will have the extra months added - IIRC the maximum is 9 months.0

2 times the cost of 5 year childrens passport (£49*2=£98) is more expensive than 1 10 year adult one (£77.50) but there is two lots of admin involved, 2 passports, 2 lots of postage etc.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.

In an effort to make you feel better ...
We're outside the UK and in the process of renewing an adult passport. The cost is 160€ for the passport plus two lots of courier costs at 25€ each, so 210€ or about £175 all told.
Obviously it's our choice to be here but it's still an ouch in terms of the costs.

Would you not just get a friend in the UK to apply for it locally?0 -
maybe its not a UK passport they're applying for? Even to extend (ie add pages to) his existing non-UK passport, my OH has to pay more than £50. I think when he got his originally 10 years ago, it cost more than £100.0
