Carpet advice please!

I'm off tomorrow to order carpets for our new house and haven't a clue what I'm looking for. Basically when we carpeted our flat where we live now we just went for cheap and cheerful but now we're moving somewhere we're going to be long term I want to spend a bit of money on some decent carpet.
Does anyone have any advice on what to go for/not to go for? We have 2 cats and we've had the looped carpet before which they pulled strands out of, our bedroom carpet was the other sort you can buy (like tufts), what is this type of carpet called? Whats the difference between all of the different names of carpets, and whats the difference between what they're made of? Are all carpets ok to clean with a standard carpet cleaner?
Any advice would be great

You would probably be better off with a wool twist pile, most decent ones are 80/20 wool mix, but there is also different weights, the heavier weight the more expensive and hard wearing. There is loads of colour choice, you may be spoilt for choice. Wool also cleans better than polypropylene or nylon or whatever names they call them, 100% synthetic is what I'd call them.
I would also suggest you try independent carpet shops and keep away from large warehouses that usually offer free fitting if you buy there overpriced underlay. Don't be afraid to negotiate on prices, especially if you are buying for a few rooms.
I have a 80/20 wool twist in my bedroom, it must have been down over 15yrs and hoovers up like new, I also have one on the stairs and it has a tiny pattern in it and I've also had one that had a mixture of colours like a heather pattern. Have a good shop around and write prices down so you don't forget.
