SOLVED - read posts 2,5, and 6 for the solution

Friend of mine has just come round to get rid of this.

Task manager did not run and Microsoft Security Essentials would not run either.

Removed that virus

But MSE and task manager still would not run.
Uninstalled MSE and tried to reinstall, but install encountered an error and rolled back.

Question: How do I get task manager to run, and also MSE to install

    OK
    That's it working now

Downloaded RKill to the desktop from the following link that tells you how to get rid of that virus specifically.

EDIT: forgot to mention I also ran the FixExe.reg file

    Cheers

    Spoke too soon though...

Installed MSE and done the quick scan, but after restarting the PC, and MSE did not start.

Clicked the shortcut to MSE and up pops...
"This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator"
However, I can still start the "msseces.exe" process by right clicking a file and "Scan with Microsoft Security Essentials...".

Had a quick search, but not found the correct solution so far, any ideas?
  • Cheers.
That's the very same site I just used a minute ago and now all is fixed after a restart.

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer\DisallowRun

Has a list of known anti-virus executables that the virus was trying to block.
    Just deleted the whole key
