Hi, I wanted to wire an extension, now I have got the diagrams from the internet, but don't seem to knw which pair internal wire to use?
i.e
2 pair 4 wire cable
3 pair 6 wire cable
4 pair 8 wire cable
Now the 3 and 4 pair cable seem alot, can these be used? , Where would you use each cable, if anyone knows to clarify the matter.
thanks

Standard phone installs use three pair cable,reason is you have a redundant pair spare.All you need to connect is;
2-Blue/White stripe
3-Orange/White stripe (if needed,this is the ringer wire)
5-White/Orange stripe
That gives you three wires spare.The standard staple gun is sized for the three pair cable,if you use four pair cable you run the risk of stapling thru the cable & nicking the internal wires.
Two pair cable is used by Sky to run their extensions to the Sky boxes & is,imho,of no use on a hard wired extension as if the pair you are using goes faulty,you have no spare pair if you have the three connected,which you do on three pair & depending on on if you have the Three connected you have one or two spare pairs0 -
Sorry to interrup, But where can you buy a cable stapler with telephone stamples? As I only seem to find metak staples.
Isn't 4 pair wire used in alarm systems I thought when wiring to telephone line?

Depends on the alarm system,I've used 2 & three pair when doing alarms but that was nearly 20 years ago.You can get staple guns from here;
