Does a charity have to pay for a domain/hosting? I guess they would but is there anything I should be aware of when I am registering a website that is listed as a charity?
Thanks

If a registered charity [as i assume it is] then free hosting "may" be available from Vidahost http://www.vidahost.com/
http://www.vidahost.com/non-profit-and-charity-hosting
They also do domain registering, but you may wish to keep domain & hosting separate
I host with them, paid, charity and non profit and never had any problemsMember of "Rubbish at Radishes" club0 -
I would try and get a paid host if you can spare a few quid a month, Heart Internet do a good package for £2.50 per month, and .co.uk domains are £2.79 per year.
Bare in mind if you go for a free host then the host owes you nothing, that means they are not obligated to assit you with any problems like server downtime or support requests. You might find you receive less of a service than the paying customers.
You're unlikely to find someone that will give you a free (premium) domain name because they will have to absorb the cost, whereas it will cost them nothing to host a small website, unless you're going to get a lot of traffic. Also remember if you are offered a free domain name, it might not be in your name so actually might not belong to you, which means the host is free to take it back or even sell it to someone else if there was an offer. You could build up a good SEO ranking and PR with Google and end up losing the domain for the sake of under £3 per year.0 -

Received a quote from them for £50.00 + VAT for a MS sql server driven website... Thats £5 a month (I've seen one elsewhere for £2.50 a month).

You could try Evo Hosting. http://evohosting.co.uk (http://www.evohosting.co.uk/hosting/starter might suit you)
I've been with them for years, with very few (if any) problems, and host several sites quite comfortably with them. They don't oversell their servers, so they're nice and fast and come with plenty of extra features, including a Free (premium) domain name for the life of the account. The free domain is only available when paying annually/bi-annually on the lower priced plans, but is available for monthly payers on the higher plans. Their support has always been second-to-none, with live support and fast responses to support tickets.
The guys that run it happen to be super friendly with my silly requests and problems too

I just found this old thread. You probably found your hosting now and have had it for years. Just in case though, DDS Hosting are great. They are reasonable for their prices and they donate to charities. They also offer basically free hosting if you are a charity yourself.
