Hard drive safe disposal

I have same situation, I tried to hammer a screwdriver through it, but it beat me, I have a heavy hammer, just the the job for it.

Open the case, and take the hammer to the platters, not the case.

HEHEehehe, +1 for the hammer. At my work we have to dispose of hard drives sometimes, so I pickup the sledgehammer we have (for cases like this) and go outside and just go nuts.

As an aside, old hard drives contain super-strong magnets. These are to one side of the disks under/over the coil thingy. See here.
