Dear all, Im looking for some advice on the following issue:
I bought an iphone for my wife off ebay as her bday gift in december. The ebay account is in her name, but the paypal account used to pay is in my name. This is because effectively Im the one who mainly operates both account and she has no clue how it works. After I bought the phone, I got it covered on my phone insurance policy which is one my current account's benefits.
Currently she is away in Dubai and called me back to say she has lost the phone (fallen out of her bag or pocket - not sure!!). So i called the sim provider and blocked the phone. Im now thinking of making a claim on the policy - but have a few concerns having had a good read of the policy terms:
1. As the phone is lost abroad, there seems to be no need to report to the local police station within a set time limit. But when I make a claim, they ask for proof of purchase. I have the Ebay receipt and order details. But as the account is in her name will they say that the phone isnt legally owned by me and hence cannot be covered.
2. When should I make the claim? now or wait until she returns? my gut feel is that I should make the claim now and tell them she had the phone with her overseas. Will they consider this as me trying to defraud them?
On balance, I feel fairly confident that the claim should suceed but just worried that because it is an iphone, they might try and figure out some way to reject the claim as have seen many stories of people making fraudulent claims for the iphone4 which this would most certainly be not!!!!!
Any advice is appreciated.
Thanks all.

as the paypal account is in your name this is proof of purchase as you paid, you wife just had the highest bid accepted. If you log into you paypal account you can print off the transaction details.
Personally I would log the claim asap, at least then you would know if covered etc.0 -
UhOh!...Just checked and the paypal account is also in her name, its only linked to my email address!...grr!...so i guess there is no way to prove that i own the phone!...More Worries:(0

does she have travel insurance she could claim off?or do you have home contents insurance with personal possessions cover you could claim off?0

Just checked the insurance policy ts&cs and it says that the claim can be for phones owned by family members, in that case, I should be ok as I can prove that she is the owner of the phone through the Ebay records.
But there is one other thing that worries me - have just downloaded the claim form and it says at one place that the proof of purchase that I attach to the claim form must mention the IMEI number of the phone - that caught me by surprise as definitely the Ebay records dont mention the IMEI number although it describes the phone in great detail. Im sure it is not unusual for sales receipts not to mention IMEI numbers, although pretty sure had I bought it from Apple direct it would have the IMEI on there. Anyways, I guess Im gonna give it a try with the claim now and see what happens - cant die wondering on this one!!!

Check your Terms and Conditions as I know for a fact that many insurance companies will not cover phones purchased from online auction sites such as Ebay.0

Have you ever connected the Iphone to a laptop or PC? Itunes? it apparantly shows on there.0

Well the ts&cs dont specifically exclude ebay purchases, i will be pretty devastated if this is so although it doesnt make sense cos surely all they want to know is that i actually did procure and possess the item and that it wasnt obtained illegally, on both counts an ebay purchase should qualify. Anyways, I dont have much choice now - too late to worry - will make the claim and see what happens! Thanks,0

Hi just received a call from the insurance people, they confirmed the Ebay records cannot be accepted as it doesnt show the IMEI number of the phone. However, they did say that they would be willing to accept a letter from my network provider which confirms the usage of the phone on the network and apparently this letter will show the IMEI number of the phone which will be acceptable to them.
So I am now onto my sim card provder for the letter, so hopefully I may be ok here - fingers crossed!0 -
Claim accepted - they are sending me the money to buy a new phone, alls well that ends well:j0
