Supplemantary Credit Cards

hi all wanted to find out if my brother has an american express credit card or any other uk credit card for that matter and they offer supplementary cards on his account. If he wants to give me one will i also be credit searched or not?
is it possible to be rejected for a supplementry card or not, i know that he will be responsible for how i use the card but does it still mean that they will run a search on me??

Many thanks

  • The only searches I'm aware of for secondary (/tertiary) cardholders are, I believe, identity checks.

Since the principle cardholder remains solely liable for the debt on the card, it's unusual for additional cardholders to be declined.

I'm willing to be corrected however...

ok thank, anyone else have any other views on this?
Also is it possible to give a supplementay card to a family member who lives abroad? Mainly talking about amercan express but other uk banks would also be appreciated?
  • I agree with Paul here, just identity check needed so acceptance should be no problem. I believe that all account holders need to be resident in the UK. May I ask why you want to give it to someone living abroad? Plus you will be hit with foreign transaction fees etc.

i see, because a family member of mine spends alot of time travelling to the uk and abroad so i will gain extra points or rewards or cash back on their spending, depending on the card i give them.

I've often wondered about this in relation to a creating a "financial association" too; if it's just an ID check would it create that link between card holders?

    Sorry to threadjack!

Tricky one really. I don't know is the answer, just ring up Amex and see what they say!
  • American Express charge cards do perform a credit check on supplementary card holders and also have the following in the terms & conditions:
8.2 Any supplementary cardmember is jointly and severally liable with you to pay to us when due all charges on this account made by that supplementary cardmember.
  • [...]and also have the following in the terms & conditions:

A quick search for that text seems to bring up the conditions for Amex charge cards - are you sure they're applicable to their credit cards?

It would be highly unusual for an additional card holder to be jointly and severally liable, since additional cardholders don't actually sign anything to get the card, thus it could not be enforced.

Not sure. I did say that this is for charge cards in my post, and I only have experience of their charge card myself - never had an American Express credit card.

Wanted to provide it as sometimes people don't realise that AmEx offer two different product types; and it may also be applicable to credit cards.

The cost of using the card abroad (fees, conversion rates, etc) will far outweigh any potential cashback or rewards.
