ok first of all, screw them!
second of all, we need to know how many of you, are you taking your car etc...
The thing I used to do on the St-Malo/portsmouth route was to take a 24h return, not use the return, and book a single from France for the 3 weeks later.
I used to pay about 34 quid instead of 50 for a pedestrian without a cabin. Me was skint student, could not afford a cabin and had to sleep/doze off on the floor with dusty carpets among a lot of people snoring/smelling/ walking on you to get to the loo/switching the light on at 3am. I even had an old disabled lady almost putting her crutch right through my head (she was with her daughter, how someone accompanying an old disabled lady would not fork out for a cabin is beyond my understanding).
The way Brittany Ferries run their business is a mistery as deep as how the train companies charge you in the UK.

LD Lines Portsmouth - Le Havre £220 Saturday crossings both ways August 07, car + 2, £159 if you can avoid weekends.
Try HERE for comparisons, not saying they are the cheapest but will show different fares both Brittany Ferries and LD.0
