Southern Railway Penalty Fare
I managed to drop my railcard and season ticket on my kitchen floor this morning, as a result when I got to Victoria I realised I didn't have a ticket.
I went up to the excess fares windows and explained and the person directed me to a man standing beside the window who said I needed to pay a penalty fare. He also told me that if I sent a copy of my ticket off when I found it I would get a full refund of the £20 costs.
I have googled it and found various accounts of people either being charged a £10 admin fee (which isn't a full refund) or not receiving a refund. Southerns own guidance says that I should have been issued with something that noted down all my season ticket details, all I got was a penalty fare notice with none of my information on it.
I was slightly annoyed to see that whilst I was being issued with the penalty fare other passengers in the same situation were being sold tickets to get through the barrier.
Will I get the money back and how much of an admin fee will I end up paying?

Yes and it should be free, apparently your allowed to forget your season ticket twice in a 12 month period, this OP successfully appealed his PFN, it was however with SW trains but the same principal should work with Southern. Appeal the PFN with a covering letter explaining how forgetful you were that day, enclose a photocopy of your season ticket.Whoa! This looks promising - I would have used forum search but it doesn't work on my work PC.0

How do yhou know other passengers were in the same situation as you? I'd hazard a guess that at a station as busy as London Victoria, you wouldn't have a clue what was discussed with the other passengers.I was slightly annoyed to see that whilst I was being issued with the penalty fare other passengers in the same situation were being sold tickets to get through the barrier.
You should get a full refund, but I believe it depends on the type of season ticket...Could be wrong, but as far as I'm aware a weekly doesn't count!
