Phone scam

Beware - phone scam - we've had voice mail left claiming an online purchase (laptop) hasn't been paid for. We have received the product and a receipt, and have a zero balance online at the purchase site. We haven't received any mail or email concerning an issue with payment. However, the latest voice mail threatens debt recovery action. We assume this is a scam to get credit card details over the phone. The transaction was with Best Buy who have recently started trading in the UK. Has anyone else had suspicious phone calls after purchasing online from this company?

  • Given that the message seems to reference a real transaction, I would call the company today to check the situation - on a number that you are comfortable using, not the one left on the message.

May be a scam, but much more likely to be confusion in the accounts dept.
  • Thanks, Is it really possible that a large company would threaten action over the phone without any prior mail or email? - Why would they have dispatched the product if the card payment had failed? Why would the online balance be zero if they hadn't been paid? ???
  • In order -

Unlikely, but not out of the question.

The payment may have been made successfully so the product was sent out - which is why the balance also shows zero. However, it's not unkown that some accounts monkey has taken your payment and wrongly matched it up to someone with a similar name, account number, etc.

It's happened to me in the past. For your own sake, you should check. Even though it's their mistake, if they don't think they've received payment, it's your credit rating which gets trashed, not theirs.
  • thanks ,its good.

  • You're quite correct on that call. Not only is there a missing apostrophe, it's not a phrase I would use! Your advice was appreciated.

    This one too, also reported.
