Can you ever post without being a knob and completely irrelevant to the thread?

If there was a thread about opinionated pedants that have no relevant experience in anything but an opinion on everything then I am sure you would be well placed to comment.

If however the thread is about, reliable cars, that are cheap to buy, reliable if maintained then any hard use is relevane, be that use as a Courier, Private Hire Driver, Taxi driver or High mileage fleet user.

I assume that you where knocked back by both the Ambulance Service and the Police Service and therefore have a deep seated hatred of the additional experience and knowledge that can be gained from working in such an environment.

It is hardly irrelevant that I have an opinion based on my own and friends high mileage use of cars, this experience makes me very well placed to judge what is or isn't a good prospect for private use.

You seem more focussed on my job and the jobs that my work colleagues do rather than actually contributing to any thread, whats the matter you are unable to spout your opinions based on nothing.

If I posted without putting my reasons and thoughts into context you would post that I have no practical hands on experience and therefore you would post negatively in that respect.

I am trying to find out when you last posted constructively to any thread?

You seem to think that the fact that the Police have used Astra for years is a negative? Sorry but the Police spends thousands of pounds researching what cars are up to the task, they test them and put them through assessments to make sure they are up to the job.

It seems rather stupid not to take their well researched opinion into consideration.

It is also normal for a person to use personal and work experience
to help others without the benefit of this experience, this may mean they mention their job and possibly parts of their private life, such as for example when a person uses a car to drive to work for many years over long distances they may feel it relevant to mention that or they used a particular car to do their job as a salesman over many miles and felt the need to put their usage into context.

You, however, never mention your job or your usage of a car, so your opinion has no context, this is probably because you have never worked perhaps? Or are currently not working.

Feel free to ignore my posts as they are not intended for you to read, but rather to assist the OP.

Remember the old saying "We can't all be heros, as somebody must be able to wave as we drive past", so a bit jealous are we?

Don't worry both my Ambulance and Police colleagues will continue to wave at you as we drive past.

Again, feel free to never reply to any of my posts ever again, I feel it won't affect me in any way.

You really do put some effort into not helping the OP.;)

I have already helped the OP, that was directed at you.

I think the best word to describe you is TROLL.

I can't remember when you last helped any OP!

cheers all so far with your input

ok a little bit more information,

i am currently driving a 1.8l petrol mondeo which is returning around 38mpg so ideally i am wanting another car to be giving closer to 60mpg as i wish for the fuel savings i would make to cover the insurance and tax of any car i buy

I'm driving a MK3 04 plate Mondeo TDCi130 with 149,000 on the clock. Its currently returning mid 50's.

Running a second car just to save 50% on fuel costs is a false economy as the purchase price and running costs would completely wipe out any savings you are likely to make.

I would sell the petrol Mondy and get a diesel one.

well its not just that as the Mrs wants to get back on the road as well as we went down to a one car household about 1 year ago due to my old Clio disintergrating (not bad as it had done 270,000) and not having enough savings to purchase a new one at the time.

its just trying to make a second car as cheap to run as possible - as i said i am running on my ideal situation at the moment trying to get ideas together and as i gain more information about each car i will start working out what my best compromises are,

costs are still my major concern however as although we have got the money to get one now, i dont want to have running costs eating into our debt overpayments and savings amounts in our budget too much
    Drop a brand challenge
on a £100 shop you might on average get 70 items save
    10p per product = £7 a week ~ £28 a month
    20p per product = £14 a week ~ £56 a month
30p per product = £21 a week ~ £84 a month (or in other words one weeks shoping at the new price)

So you're going from a one car household to a two car? Are you keeping the Mondeo?

If so that changes everything, use the Mondeo for the uni run as it's an ideal motorway barge, especially in diesel form. get the smallest/cheapest car that the child seat will fit into, with a petrol engine since it will only be doing low miles. For the few occasions it's too small, just use the Mondeo.

As others have said, superminis come with a premium because they're cute, so something like a Fiesta may be better value. I'd still avoid French or Italian. Go with Ford, anything German, Sweedish or Japanese. Also anything Korean/Malaysian not made in the 90s.

Some more models to consider: Toyota Starlet, Nissan Micra, Subaru Justy and Suzuki Swift. (The last two are the same car)
  • Bangernomics is probably the way to go, spend £500 or so on some old beast and if it fails you can buy another if it's not economic to repair. If you get something with a long tax and test on it then cross your fingers!

Other than that I echo the Mondeo (diesel) comment as I've got one but have only got 142k on the clock but I am catching Hammyman! I also average mid 50s MPG. You may struggle to get one for £2k though......
