new bt order

i have inherited a house and got the phone line reconnected free of charge...i contacted bt to arrange to have line rental with them and agreed that i would take advantage of their cheaper offer to pay for a year online..however i just noticed on the confirmation e-mail that i have been signed up to their unlimited weekend plan..i dont remember doing this on the phone and dont really want to as i will be getting sky talk as part of their package..is this normal and can i cancel..the line only became operational yesterday

You have* to have a calls plan and the Unlimited Weekend Plan is the minimum (and it's free anyway).

    * Even if you use another company as your default calls carrier and don't actually use it.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Yes you can still have sky but BT will charge you an extra £5 or so each month. By paying 1 year up front you have tied yourself in anyway. Why do you want to be with Sky? It's actually quite expensive compared to other alternatives. I recommend to everyone BT and use 18185 for every non-inclusive call.

i havent actually got the year up front yet..the e-mail just states £13.60 monthly charges frpm 15/02...so is this in effect for rental(which i can then pay yearly cheaper) and still register with sky talk? i want their calls package as it means i can get broadband unlimited cheaper

Sky broadband is not the cheapest supplier and MSE only recommend Sky BB and Sky Talk if you don't actually use the home phone for calls as Sky Talk is definitely not the cheapest supplier. The savings by paying £7.50 for Sky BB instead of £12.50 per month without Sky Talk will be offset by the increased cost of calls on Sky Talk. It's impossible to stay under 2GB these days so I doubt you'll be on the free plan that Sky have.

    £13.60/month is line rental.

If you opt for Sky Talk, don't hand over your line rental too - you'll be in breach of your contract with BT if you do.

If you leave your line rental with BT, remember that Sky Talk CPS/WCLI will prevent you making any calls via BT - so you will be charged £1.50/month for not making the required 2 calls/month and will also be charged £2.70/month for Caller Display and/or £1/month for basic 1571 if you use it/them.
