Help with small print for Santander £100 + £50 switching?

Got an email through Quidco now saying they'll give £50 on top of Santander's £100 for switching to their current account. £150 becomes appealing.

I don't want to switch all my D/Ds from my Halifax as i'd then have to switch them back again, which is a bit of hassle.

I do have a Nationwide account i no longer use though.

Could i set up a fake SO with this Nationwide account (by fake, i mean set it up to pay my Halifax £1 a week for example) & gain this £100 bonus (similar to how many did with Nationwide's £75 offering last year)?

Or do i have no choice but to switch ALL my D/Ds from my Halifax AND my weekly wage to Santander?
Have folk had hassle getting their £100?

And before it's said, don't worry guys - i know all about the horror stories of Santander. I have no intention of staying with them. My intentions are to leave the account/shut down once i've got my money.

  • Is it really worth the hassle ...I would say not.
  • It can't be an SO it has to be an active direct debit. I don't think you have to switch your wages, just pay in the minimum amount each month.

You could try moving one DD to Nationwide and then asking Santander to switch that account.

why? A few minutes work for £150? All i can say is - your day-to-day job must pay you a hell of a lot if you can't be bothered with a small amount of hassle for £150.

Thanks for the reply, although are you sure it's D/D only? I quote from the Santander website:
£100 offer: You are not eligible for this offer if you currently hold, or have held in the past three months, any Santander UK, Alliance & Leicester, cahoot and Cater Allen current account. Offer is only open to customers accepted for a Preferred In Credit Rate, Reward, Zero or Premium account. £100 will be paid into your new account within 3 months of account opening providing you have at least two active direct debits or standing orders (paid at least once) set up on the account within 11 weeks and have paid in at least £1,000 each month. If you do not have any direct debits or standing orders to switch you will not receive £100. Limit of one £100 switcher account per person. Offer is limited and will be withdrawn on 27.02.2011. For details of our fees and interest rates visit www.santander.co.uk or pick up a leaflet at any branch. Rates and information correct as at 08/12/2010.

This is why i thought standing orders were ok to qualify you. I've used the search function on this site to find a similar offer from Santander seemingly only offering it for D/D being switched.

    But this one states SOs??

Or do i HAVE to transfer a D/D? I'm confused now lol.

I remember looking into an older version of this offer that definitely only counted Direct Debits towards the "must switch two" quota. I received a letter in the post yesterday asking me to switch that included Standing Orders, so it looks they might have changed the terms of the offer.
  • If the T&Cs are different now then I don't know - I was thinking back to the people on here saying they didn't get the £100 because they didn't have DDs to switch.

Maybe you could just phone them up and ask for clarification?

Unless you are really desperate and do not have a pot to pi** in then I would say that Pawnbroker is right in saying that it is not worth all the hassle. All the best

Tbh, i really don't see how it matters.

I'm not being confrontational here when i say this, but define "hassle".

I don't do a great deal tbh - i go to work & most night afterwards i just come home & relax with the gf, or do so after the gym. I don't particularly "do" anything which would make me a "busy man". So the way i see it is why not use a bit of that spare time to do an online application, shift a bit of money here, a bit of money there, and bag £100+£50 for sitting on my backside for 5-10 (or whatever) minutes.

Still, i'll have a look to see if there's any simple D/Ds to transfer across just to be sure of it.

When would be a good time to apply? The reason i'm asking is this:

I've just set up some direct debits to be sure, (as well as SOs) but they'll take a few days to show up on my online banking page.

If i apply today (for the Santander switching) then obviously they're not going to be set up prior to the application. I don't know how quick Santander will handle the switch though, so for all i know i could apply today, the D/Ds coul dbe active in a couple days, but it'll be a week before Santander put the switch in motion.

The reason i ask is because this offer ends at the end of the month.
