Car Insurance Model Discrepancy

Can anyone who is fairly certain please advise me on the following matter. A car has been insured and a claim has recently been made after an accident. No other drivers were involved.
The car was insured over the phone. That range of cars has 3 models. The correct model was given. However within the correct model which I shall call prestige there is a further small variation. One variation marked by a letter at the end of the model name indicates a slightly cheaper interior. The other, a slightly superior spec.
The insurer is now offering to pay out based on the cheaper variation. Apparently they have looked up some kind of national database when first insuring the car and used the model number but that was incorrectly logged in the first place.
Clearly there are other lessons that could be learned here but I would like to know what the possible outcomes are here? I do appreciate your interest and advice but ideally I would like advice from someone with experience.
i am aware that it is the policy holder who ought to check over the details, though this detail was supposedly a very very minor one. I do wonder if the insurance company has recorded the call or if that is likely? Obvious that can be found out but I just wonder if anyone knows that fact off hand. It is highly possible that in the call the person who is the policy holder gave the correct information only for the person at the other end to fail to record the information precisely.
I also have to question that if the insurance company salesperson was given the correct model number but then proceeded to simply follow the national database using the registration, presuming those details to be correct (even though they weren't) then where does the buck stop?
Hopefully that makes sense. Many thanks for entertaining what is a pretty silly situation.
