Can anyone give me some ADVICE as how to get meters removed without having to pay.
Sound like you already know what to do.

Have threatened to change suppliers to no avail.
This is a charge SP are making for a service. Don't want to pay for the service?

    Don't have the meters changed.
Find another supplier who will cover the costs for you.

(If SP have asked for a security deposit, others might too)

Not sure how to campaign to the OFT against these charges, theartfullodger but I fully support you!

I might well look into this myself, as while it doesn't affect me personally, I feel very strongly about this issue.

If I were your tenant I'd refuse to pay you the charge. I'd say that with a bit of research you could have changed to a supplier that didn't charge so it's up to you to pay.

    Why?

The tenant was responsible for the supply as per their tenancy agreement and the landlord will now be out of pocket because the tenant had the meter changed assumedly without permission from the landlord.

My landlord made it very clear that if I wanted to change the prepay meters to credit meters I was responsible for the charges. (so I didn't bother :D)
  • I was a previous eon customer, moved from a property with credit to prepayment meters, eon changed them for free. Took a couple of months, as the supply wasn't with eon when I moved in, so swapped that first - BG were rubbish!!

I aleady said why. Because with a little effort the landlord could get them changed for no cost to him. Just because he's too lazy to either reason with the current supplier or phone around and see who will help, doesn't mean he can simply offload the fee onto someone else. Especially when there's nothing in the rental agreement to that effect. You can't simply pay for a service and then charge someone else for it.

The meters were changed because the tenant ran up a debt though - so undoubtedly without the landlord's permission.

I think that'd count under altering the property which is excluded from the vast majority of tenancy agreements.
