Help - Windows Vista reinstallation cd

Hi there,

I've been having problems with my HP Compaq laptop, with it continually freezing for hours at a time, and after taking it in for repairs, was told that I would need a reinstallation CD, which unfortunately was not with the laptop when I bought it. HP have been incredibly unhelpful, as my warranty has now run out, but can anybody offer any advice as to where I might purchase a CD? I'd be grateful for any advice.

Who repaired it, and what did they do?

If it didn't come with a disc, you should either be able to create one from windows, or it will have a factory recovery partition, try holding down F11 at boot - backup your data somewhere first, all assuming someone hasn't wiped the hard disk

It could be hardware, especially if it has a nvidia (see nvidia defect forum if it applies) graphics card, recent hp laptops seem prone to overheating and power connection problems. Being out of warranty doesn't stop you exercising your rights under the sale of goods act if it is hardware related, and hasn't lasted a reasonable time

There is a recovery partition on the laptop thats usually accessed by pressing one of the function keys during startup which then brings up the option to do a restore.

    Hi there,

I have an account with Virgin Media and an additional PC support policy, whereby you pay a monthly fee for PC support, which is outsoured to another company.

Following 5 hours of his home digital support, and taking over remote access to my computer, his ony advice was that I purchase the installation disk, until then, there was nothing further he could do. And yes, before you ask, I do intend cancelling my contract with Virgin.

With regards to HP, after the customer service assistant realised that my warranty had run out, she refused to even put me throuh to a technican.

I've taken your advice with regards to F11, after backing up all data of course, and it seems to be running fine, but I still intend to purchase the disk, just in case. I just wanted to give an update, and say thank you for your help, it's greatly appreciated., and if you don't run your own PCsupport company, you should be.

    All the best.
