No claims discount query.....

My Grandpa has recently changed his car insurance from Aviva to Direct line.

He has been driving for over 30 years with no claims, so naturally put the maximum no claims discount of 9 or more years on his application. He paid the premium in full, and thought nothing more of it, until this morning he recieves a letter from Direct Line saying they have recieved No Claims entitlement from Aviva of only 5 years, and that he now owes Direct Line an extra £40.....should he not pay this amount his insurance will be cancelled on 22/02/2011.

On ringing Aviva, it appears they only show proof on No Claims up to 5 years.....they refuse to inform Direct Line of my Grandpa's full 9 year entitlement, even though they accepted (verbally at least) that he has no claims of 9 years at least.

Is there anything that we can do now?? My Grandpa feels agreeved to pay the extra £40, as he hasnt built his No Claims Bonus up from scratch for insurance companys to simply ignore it.

If he does cancel with Direct Line, is he going to face the same problem again, as surely the fault lies with Aviva??

Any advice greatly appreciated.

How long had he been with Aviva, and has he retained his proof of NCD which he provided when joining them? D Line might accept a combination of documents.

Been with Aviva for just a year.....his previous proof of NCD from Saga insurance was sent to Aviva when first taking out the policy.
