Retail website/shopping cart software.

Hi there.

Just wondering if anyone could recommend a decent shopping cart software package for the back end of a retail website. Needs to be something that will provide product reviews and stock management and decent CMS for the front end. Don't want to use sage pay as I have seen a few providers that only link in with sage pay. Price wise, well I am willing to pay out on something decent.

Many thanks

The best one I've used is called Magento and it's free.
  • No point in paying for something if you can get it better for free. Excellent advice. Thank you. I will have a look at both of those.

I can highly recommend ekm powershop they charge just 19.99 per month inc hosting and you can choose from a range of templates or design your own.

There is a joining fee of about £80 but thats a one off charge. After that they just bill you monthly and there is no contract so you can easily get out if you want to.

I use it for my own web site and not having a computer background I found it fairly straight forward to set up and add products, pictures and prices etc.
  • Magento is great and open source.

Personally i spent ages looking at a shopping cart. Only one did what we wanted and that was

    CSCart

I had a look at some free ones but honestly, you get what you pay for and your not paying anything.
I all have learnt is from others on many sites.
    Seek legal help if unsure.
Dont pay Private Parking tickets - they are mere invoices.

  • Unless you have your own server you want to be careful about using Magento. It's very resource-hungry and web hosts tend to hate people using it in shared environments.

  • I'm part time admin for an online shop that uses zen-cart. Free open source. When we did a redesign lately it was a pig to do, with templates all over the place, BUT for day to day management it does very well. The online documentation is a bit poor but answers to all questions are easily found in the forums. THere are companies which design/set it up for you, if you don't have time/impetus.
