eon recent price increase

Hello everyone,
I have only just joined the forum and this is my first post, so I hope I have done everything correctly.
I have only been an eon customer since October 2010 and the recent price increase, although not entirely unexpected, was nonetheless most unwelcome. What I was particularly shocked by was the real amount of the increase in percentage terms. The increase announced by eon of 9% for electricity and 3% for gas are nothing like my own increased rates and have clearly been manipulated in such a way as to present the figures in the most favourable light for eon. I am on eon's SaveOnline 3 tariff and for my average annual usage, which is not radically different to the "normal" usage quoted by eon, the increases are approximately 15% for electricity and 6% for gas. I also calculated the increase for someone on the same tariff as me, using eon's quoted average consumption of 16,500 kWh for gas and 3,300 kWh for electricity and the percentage increase is still similar to my own.
I hope this is useful information and would urge everyone to check their own increase for themselves, whoever their supplier is, as I suspect all the energy companies have used similar trickery to disguise the reality of the massive increases incurred by many of their customers.
Thanks, Peter.

  • All the providers when making an increase state that what ever the % increase is, it is the average, therefore most folks will find, unfortunately that it may well be more, as usually, most house holds use below or above the average OFGEM figures of 16,500kwh gas and 3300kwh elec, the long and short is tho, Save Online 3, even with the increase, will still be very competitive in the current market, i.e if any savings from other providers thy'll be minimal

    Hi Peter

The percentage increases announced to the Press in January were based on the average energy consumption of a typical residential household on our standard tariff.

Average consumption figures used were those advised by Ofgem.

As Airmike says, not everyone will see increases exactly as per the announcement. Some will see more, some less depending on the product.

Hope this explains the announcement Peter. Let me know if you need any more info as will be happy to help.

  • Hi Airmike and Malc,
Thanks for your earlier replies. The point I was trying to highlight was that, as you have mentioned, the increase can be significantly different dependant upon usage and the percentages quoted will not apply to a very large number of customers. This of course applies to all the energy companies and the figures quoted in the press and elsewhere would be far more informative and helpful if they were given as a band, e.g. 7-18% for electricity, or whatever the correct range would be. This would at least alert customers and (hopefully) galvanize them into taking appropriate action. When I first read of the increases in eon's prices, I took them at face value and it was only when checking the new rates against those on my one bill so far, that I realised the actual increase I will face.
    Peter.

P.S. Hope I'm not overworking you, Malc, as I have been communicating with you on two different posts today!:)
