Cystitis/urine infection question

Hi My cat has Cystitis/urine infection. We have another cat who shares the same litter box. Is it possible for our other cat to pick up a urine infection? It is changed frequently.

Right now he is isolated in the dog's den so he doesn't pee all over the house. He has got food and water. He seems a bit perkier. He is sitting up rather than lying down and doesn't seem to be peeing as much. He has also had some water and ate a bit of food so fingers crossed.

i dont know whether they are able to transfer infection but i do know that i help this problem by putting tuna in a bowl of water and keep giving them the tuna water (draining it off each time), reuse the tuna to get the cat to drink bowls and bowls of tuna water over the day, to flush them out.
  • I just suddenly thought that as the infection is in the urine there is a chance it could spread to the other cat when he goes to the toilet.

    Hi

Sorry to hear your cat is suffering.

I think it unlikely that infection could be shared across the litter tray so I shouldn't worry on that front.

Do you just have one tray? There is actually a cat and litter tray equation lol!

Number of cats in house + 1 = no of litter trays that should be available!:o

Have you been to the vet with your puss tat?

Cystitis in cats is sometimes a stress thing - has anything changed recently? Any new pets? Builders in? New cats in the neighbourhood?
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Yes had to have him admitted on Sunday. Picked him up on Monday and took him to our local vet who gave him an injection of two weeks worth of antibiotics and sent him home. He perked up a bit today.

No there hasn't been any changes. On Saturday he seemed perfectly normal. Wolfed his fish down like he usually does. Then on Sunday started being sick and peeing where he lay.

Rather hard to tell how he's doing because he is rather lazy anyway so he is just sleeping. However he sat up for a bit in the afternoon. Will try and update tomorrow. Thank you very much for your replies.

Cystitus is so awful, I've had it myself. Did the vet give your cat something to make him more comfortable / painkiller? You need to keep an eye on his litter tray (make sure he has his own.) When my boy cat had it I used to follow him to the tray to check that something was coming out - if he isn't passing anything, it's life threatening as it means he is blocked. If it's at least coming out then my vet has given cystaid and antibiotics and it cleared up well. I try to make sure he has more fluid now - tins of cat food, waters bowls all over the house!! We had a water fountain but they kept knocking it over....he loves to drink the rainwater outside from old flowerpot holders.
Less stuff, more life, love, laughter and cats!
Even if I'm on the shopping threads, it doesn't mean I'm buying! Sometimes it's good to just look and then hit the CLOSE button!

Well he seems to be on the mend. He came out the dog's den this afternoon and wandered round the house. Had something to eat and drink so that's good. He also has a dry bed so that's really good. And he is also washing himself. So all in all progress is being made.

Our vet explained that she would rather he was peeing than not at all. We had to call the vet not long after we brought him home because he was still peeing where he lay.

Our vet reassured that the antibiotics would take a day or so to work. He's just sleeping in the den at the moment. The den is the cage where the dog used to sleep at night but doesn't use it anymore. We are going to keep him in there until we're satisfied that he's back to normal.
