On line quote form question

Options
I am trying to find out whther it is cheaper for my husband or I to be the named driver on our shared car (driving will be about equal I imagine, as its mainly social/leisure use) but have been warned that online forms can "remember" the information and then either not accept you with altered details or feel that you are trying to commit insurance fraud if you are changing the original detials. But you have to be truthful filling them in, so you can't trry a flase name, right? All I want to know is whic of us will be the cheapest to have as the named driver....not make a dishonest application!

Therefore if any one here can advise I would be gratful.

Husband: been full licence holder 1yr 9 months, with Pass plus. (no no claims bonus) totally clean licence,

Me: six points until 12/12/06 when I lose three. Both are SP30s. Also involved in a knock for knock in April 04.

Car: 1.7 l coupe

Any ideas?

knock for knock hasnt existed for coming on 30 years so I assume you mean it was settled on a 50/50 split liability basis.

Worst case senario I imagine would be that changing details between quotes will simply flag the policy to be looked at by the insurers counter fraud department. As long as you are being honest this should cause you no concerns and if it is simply a case of switching between the drivers then it will be clear what you are doing.... remember however it is the policyholders NCD that is used (you dont say if you have any NCD or not but assuming you do) so when your husband is the ph the ncd will have to be put to zero.

I have had no conformation that from our R&D department that any of our competitors "remember" details from quotes for anything other than fraud detection, rating change tests and marketing for non-accepts but it could be wrong

  • yeah, 50/50.....I did not realise the difference...not having been alive 30 years ago and always having heard it described as knock for knock, thanks for setting me straight.

As for the other thing, I absolutely have no intention of being anything other than 100% honest! Its the only way I want to be, I assure you.....now, if only I can convince the insurers/banks/other paid for sevices I have to deal with to feel the same way and we would all be happy! Thanks for response.

I wasnt alive 30 years ago either but having worked in insurance for too long you tend to learn things.

Knock for knock was a war time invention to simply the process when people had more important things to think about. Rather than at the moment where you get 50% of your losses back and your insurers had to pay out 50% of the other sides with the old knock for knock agreement everyone just dealt with their own losses... not a problem if you have a high level of cover and no excess but a little unfair if you only had TPFT cover.

Back to the question in hand, catgirl79, you shouldn't have anything to worry about.

If I were you, I would do your research with the various comparison websites to find a handful of insurers. When you have got that far there is absolutely no problem with you phoning them up and asking about which way round you'd like the policy to be set up i.e. you or your partner as policyholder.

There's nothing fraudulent in it at all - assuming you declare correctly who will be doing the majority of the driving.
