main phone socket - Virgin internet speed

Hi can someone please help me. My internet speed has dropped from 3.3 to 0.2, the only fault that I can think of is that the main phone socket is located by the bottom corner of the window and there is some condensation there. I have plugged in a wired phone directly to the socket and when I very gently wiggle the connection there is a slight crackle on the phone. I have been in touch with BT who state that the line is OK. I took the front cover of the socket and it is a tiny bit dirty inside, it looks dry but I did put the hairdryer on it for a few minutes. No difference in speed when I reconnceted the router.
Should I get BT out to check and posssibly replace the socket?

Are you on Virgin National or Virgin Cable?
If you are on Virgin National, try changing your microfilter and unplug any other phones.
You could log on to your router and post its line statistics. That gum you like is coming back in style.0 -
Thanks for your reply, I am on Virgin National and the speed has progressively risen to 1520 kbps, I presume it can only rise in increments to prevent a surge. I did unplug everything, put in a new filter and then the router, minus phone.
I am hoping that the problem is damp in the BT socket. Could I spray the internals with anything to keep it drier? Maybe BT should relocate the main socket but who would pay?:hello:0
