Cater Allen are great for small business accounts, because their charges are more in line with those of personal accounts. I wouldn't touch them for a personal account because of the lack of FPS and limited online banking functionality. Their telephone customer service is very friendly and you always get through to helpful and intelligent people.

I definitely wouldn't touch Cater Allen for a non-GBP account, as their charges when I've enquired about this in the past have been ridiculously high. It seems you have to pay a fee every time money goes in or out of the account. Go for Citi if you want a UK-based USD (or EUR) account.

Anyone with info on Cater Allen much appreciated?

I have found out that there is a service fee of £15/month if the balance falls below £5000 at any point during the month.

Apart from that - no idea.

I held an account with Robert Fleming & Co http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Fleming_%26_Co. which was taken over by Cater Allen

I also held an account at Brown Shipley :D

I have a Cater Allen a/c for my business and find it more than adequate for my needs (v small company, low number of monthly transactions). the lack of FPS is not a big deal here as BACS will suffice for most of my needs.

As mentioned above the staff have always been friendly and knowledgable when I've called them and I believe that at present you don't actually need the £5k minimum either.

Just spoken with CA and the 5000£ is required to open the account and if not maintained then a £15 charge per month is made.
