Basic Bank Accounts - Struggling

I currently bank with Halifax with the easycash account due to adverse credit. The branch moved town so need a local bank. I have a debt with Natwest that I am disputing for a couple of hundred as I have no recollection of it - so they are a no go. Lloyds TSB have rejected me for Cash card account - even the co-op cashminder has turned me down.
I have ordered my statutory credit report from experian yesterday to have a good look over it and get any error's corrected as I feel there are some things on there that could be harming my chances of obtaining a decent current account. I earn a good wage - 1800 a month just short of.
There is a Barclays near me but I fear another rejection.
Am I right in assuming that you can deposit and withdraw at the Post Office for Barclays cash card accounts? There is a Post Office at the end of my street so would be ideal.
Would anyone suggest someone different? I know sorting out any outstanding debts I don't remember is key to me getting a good current account so just need something basic that is good and that isn't any of the above mentioned accounts.

Thanks in advance

Why do you need branch access?
As far as I know you can't use the counter to pay in cash or cheques or draw out cash if you have a Halifax Easycash account.

You can transact at a Post Office with the Halifax Easycash account if you need to.

Get leaflet "Banking through the Post Office" from any Post Office. It lists all banks that use their counter service and what you can do with it.

Details also on their website in the "Counter Services" section under
    "using your bank account"

You might need to also check with the other credit reference agencies as we. if Experian is OK.

At the risk of repeating myself.
You can use your existing Halifax Easycash account in the Post Office.
Therefore you have no need to change accounts.

    united66,

I remember you posted a thread about applying for the Barclays Cash Card Account.

    How did that go?

To answer your original post question - yes, you can withdraw cash with a Barclays Cash Card Account, but no deposits though (http://www.postoffice.co.uk/portal/po/content2?catId=94800755&mediaId=19600177). Deposits can be done in branch. I would suggest do withdrawals and deposits in branch, since there is one near you, withdrawals using cash machines (up to £300. If more, do it in branch).

I made an appointment and forgot about it due to work.
I want an account whereby I can deposit cheques to my account either via post office or a branch nearby (only really Barclays, HSBC and Nationwide left). I am expecting a cheque from a family member soon and don't want to have to travel towns to deposit it - is a bit of a pain. You can't deposit with the Easycash at post offices?

It's looking like Barclays might be the only option left unless anyone else has any suggestions? I would prefer one that reports to the CRA's to help boost my credit file. Do Barclays do this? Halifax don't seem to by what I've seen on equifax anyway (I had a membership for a few months about a year back).

EDIT: Seen 'noh's post on being able to deposit cheques and cash at post office for the Easycash. I didn't know you could do this thanks for the info. I would like a change however as the Visa Electron cards are tacky and the customer service hasn't been too clever. Halifax treat you differently to Current Account customers.
