help! my BARCLAYS account have been closed but i still got money in it

I lived in UK in 2008 and i have opened barclays accounts.
however i decided to come back to Thailand at the end of the year and didnt check my bank account since.
However I called Barclays today and asked about my account and they said that my accounts have been closed and they couldnt tell me the reason why it has been closed. They said they sent the letter to me in April 2010 informing that they were going to close my account but I didn't get it because I don't live there anymore.

What should I do?
Can anyone explain to me the possible reasons why a bank account is closed without the owner authorization?

  • Dormancy.
I assume that the account had no transactions (as if you were using it overseas you would either have been checking it and/or would have noticed your card being declined once the account was closed).
You also admit that you did not keep your correspondence address with Barclays updated (which will be covered in the terms and conditions somewhere).
Barclays do not need your permission to close the account (the circumstances where they will close it, after giving notice - as it appears they did in April 2010 - are set out in their terms and conditions).

If you had a balance in the account, you will be able to now request that money from Barclays. However, it could take some time (particularly as it appears the last address they held for you is no longer valid, which may present a problem if they ask you for official, recent, documents proving address, in addition to your passport).
  • Do you recall if you were in any debt at all or were you in your overdraft? Sometimes they can write off debt. Since you have been away the account would have been inactive, could this be a reason? The last reason is that you need to be UK resident to have a bank account, this situation changed back in 2008.
  • the bank told me to go to this website
    mylostaccount.org.uk/
but then it said it needs up to 3 months to find my account
so... what if i go straight to the UK and show my ID, prove that Im me.
can I open the account straight away?
