I made sure I had the relevent boxes checked etc to ask that details are not passed on.

It is if you didn't opt out of marketing, yes.
Call the card company and get them to update all of your contact preferences. You may also need to contact the companies they've already passed your details on to to do the same.
In future be very careful to scour the application form for contact preferences.
They can be cheeky - i.e. the first box can be "Tick if you don't want to be contacted" and the second "Tick if you do want to be contacted" etc.
