Do I need to choose a return journey

I am trying to book a return ticket to Sheffield on Thursday. An off-peak return is £31 and I have picked an outward journey. But I am being asked to choose a time for the return journey. Why am I being asked to do this for a ticket described as being valid for "Any off-peak train. Return within 1 month."

As long as any tickets you buy online aren't just valid for a particular train (which "advance fares" are), then you can use them for any train on any day that is permitted.

For an Off Peak Return you do not have to specify when you are returning.

If they get you to specify the return train, they are then able to confirm that the ticket you are buying is suitable.
I.e. If you are planning to return when an Anytime ticket is required, you will see that an Off Peak ticket is not available.

That's just a guess, but no you do not have to specify the return train.
Or to put it another way, you don't have to use the train you do specify.

That's great. Thanks for confirming this for me.
