Confused about wireless router

A while ago Virgin sent me a new wireless router, a D-Link 615, I had a quick go at setting it up but it was beyond me.
Tonight I had a proper go at setting it up and I am quite confused. It appears I have to configure it to my laptop.
Does it not just send out some wireless signals and my lappy picks them up?
If I do have to configure it do I also have to configure two more laptops and an XBOX 360?
I need help

OK, look on the bottom of the router - does it have something like "WEP/WPA Key: " written on the bottom and then some sort of serial number?0

I had problems setting up my virgin d-link router, the instructions that come with it are minimal to say the least!
I'd give them a ring.
I rang them (found a number via the My Virgin page on their website) and they talked me through it in only a few minutes - its easy when you know how!Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the endQuidquid Latine dictum sit altum videtur0 -
Unless you want no wireless security whatsoever, then yes, you have to set up the wireless network on the router (unless it's pre-set). Once you have set up the encryption key you just have to enter the same encryption (once) for each wireless device you are connecting to it. So you configure your lappy to the router, not vice versa.
Please don't use WEP encryption, as it's obsolete and the average 8 year old can hack it in minutes. Use one of the WPA encryption modes offered.
Once you've logged into the router interface, the wireless options can be seen and set up.No free lunch, and no free laptop
