Printer cannot communicate with computer

Hello moneysavers, I've just been trying to do a little bit of printing and have failed. A disembodied voice calls out that the printer cannot communicate with the computer. I have recently uninstalled avg, replacing with avast. I have turned off the windows firewall and still cannot print. I have also tightened ull cables ect. Any ideas? Many thanks.

Make and model does help. What OS are you running?
Go to Control Panel>Printers and Faxes, is your printer selected as the default printer?
Can you print a test page from the printer when the USB is disconnected (if so the printer is mechanically OK)?No free lunch, and no free laptop
