Changing Supplier

Hi,
We have arrears with one utilities company in my name and want to switch to another, as they have a much better deal, complication is we are going to declare bankruptcy next month, and want to start with a new company with a zero balance and no bad feelings, and hopefully no pre payment meter! Our current provider has refused our switch for gas due to arrears, elec switch has been approved although there are also arrears not so much (£200V£600).
Should we start a new supply in OH name or should we start new supplier in grown up sons name?
Dont want to do anything illegal or fraudulent, but want to avoid pp meter if possible.
Thank you.

They'll be round with the PPM as soon as they are aware you are going bankrupt. Don't expect any credit from anyone for quite a while.

If you've over £200 arrears with a PPM you won't be able to switch supplier

Does your grown up son live at home?
Is he willing to have the bills in his name and pay them it you don't have the money to do so and potentially risk his own credit rating?
As has already been said as soon as they know you are bankrupt expect to have to pay the bills very promptly or expect a ppm.
If you money problems are that bad a ppm may be the best things as you can't run up any bills and the prices are the same as the standard tariff i.e. no DD discount which you wont be able to get once your bankrupt.

  • Once BR we will be able to pay the bills promptly, as we have a fair income coming in, but have been trying to keep up with debts for some 15 years, and have never had utilities arrears until the past 12 months, when my income suddenly dropped. Has anyone who has been made BR with some arrears managed to stay with current supplier and AVOID PP meter?
We could still qualify for DD discount post BR as can use basic account for DD's.
