Tesco's Wedding cake

We're on a tight budget and I've noticed Tesco's sell round iced rich fruit celebration cakes in large, medium and small. Has anyone ever bought one of these? I was also wondering if it would be possible to stack these straight on top of each other (I'm not so keen on the pillar supports) and then maybe decorate with some ribbon around each layer and maybe some flowers? Thanks!

My friend had their cake - was fine and she made it look really nice with ribbon and flowers on it to match her red dress. I know M&S sell similar and they sell dowling rods so you can sit them on top of each other but securely. I'm planning to do that or buy/hire one of those tiered cake stands - the sort that are staggered above each other or in a S shape0

Im concidering the tesco finest or the m&s cake i think with ribbon and flowers i think it will look really nice. If not there is a cusion cake ive seen at £350 which i dont know if i can bring myself to pay for.0

We are going for the m&s cake, helps that oh works there - I love the staff discount!. Had a cutting bar last week to try (any excuse to buy cake) and it was lovely, really nice. Keep an eye on m&s as sometimes they have them on 3 for 2, so your top tier will be free.0

I was watching 'easy to bake'on bbc 1 on saturday and the presenter used dowling rods to stack her 3 tier cake asshe said it would stop the tiers collapsing into one another.
She also said to stack the tiers when you had arrived at the venue - and that some people tried to transport the cakes all stacked up ......it did make me wonder how dull some people were.2014 Target;

All good cake decorating shops will sell doweling rods or you could try ebay, you could even get silk flowers from there to decorate it, ribbon too! saves a lot of hassle if there is nowhere nearby work or home!0

As others have said, you will nee dowling rods, even without the pillars.
We're thinking of going down the M&S route too, works out under £200, compared with the £350 that most bakeries have quoted.0 -
We had a Tesco cake and an Asda cake (had to mix and match as Tesco didn't have the small cake in stock and Asda didn't have the larger one!). They were both lovely and even people who didn't like wedding cake tried them and said they were beautiful and couldn't believe where they were from
.
I used ribbon round the sides and made a small artificial flower arrangement to sit on the top and scattered silk petals over the stacked cake. Didn't use any dowelling rods...just removed the smaller one from its board and sat it on top of the other. There was enough for around 50 people and still quite a bit left over.
I think the whole cake cost us about £30.0 -
You do really need to use the dowelling rods as otherwise they cakes can sink into the lower ones, the likelihood of this increases with the more layers you have! For decorations, most sugarcraft shops sell ready made sugar flower sprays. they might seem a little expensive but I know how much time goes into making them!
If you need any help feel free to PM me. I'm no expert but have done 1 weddinc cake before and I'm doing my own...including making the sugar flowers from scratch!!0 -
I can really recommend the Marks and Spencers cakes....used them lots of times..usually as anniversary or christening cakes most recently....they taste very moist and are very reasonable cost wise....I should imagine the tesco ones are similar...frugal October...£41.82 of £40 food shopping spend for the 2 of us!
2017 toiletries challenge 179 out 145 in ...£18.64 spend0 -
sorry mountainofdebt.....but im a cake maker, and some cakes HAVE to be transported already built due to the designs....theres absolutely no-way some cakes can be assembled on site, as u cant add the decor until its built.
however if you have an easy design then sure...build on site
dowels will be needed....but if you are having all sponge....drinking straws will do the job:dance:
