Hang an airer in the stairwell?

Options
My stairs are open plan arise from the kitchen - all the heat from downstairs drifts up there - is it possible to put one of those pulley airer things up there (obviously not when cooking because of smells). What is the best way for a diy-er to work in a stairwell safely? I am not scared of heights but am a middle age lady with no desire to break anything!
I got rid of my tumble dryer to save money so this seem like the next logical step - space is VERY limited in this cottage too.

Thank you ormus - this is very clear and I think I might be able to manage that.
Have to admit that I lack quite a lot of gorm and am often short of gruntle too (similar soh)!

If you dry your washing on the stairs the bedrooms will get loads of damp in them?

Have to agree with BM. Clothes pulleys were designed and used to air laundered and ironed clothes, not to dry washing.
The other problen is that a pulley is almost as wide as the stairs, so you can't stand beside it and put stuff on, when you let it down, one end will foul the stairs whilst the other end will be out of reach.
I would think a couple of collapsible airers from Argos would be a better solution.
.................:)....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

If you go ahead, make sure you use very heavy duty fishings and screw into the joists. In fact I would look at bolting right through the joists. Wet clothing can weigh a lot.

If you are still interested in an Airier to dry your laundry whilst hanging over the stair well. Take a look at what the Dutch use. I have a couple in my home and I can safely say that all my Laundry gets to dry on them. Ok! when the weather is nice and Sunny it gets to go outside.

Unfortunately these seem to only available in Holland from particular Hardware shores. My Ex-her-indoors-overseas has several, not only hanging over the 'Trap' that's stairwell in Dutch, but also over the 3rd floor utility room door too. It is available from the hardware store called, 'Blokker' the product is known as a 'Hangdroogrek' and retails for 5.99 euros. Unfortunately I can not provide the link direct to the product, something to done with spammers.

I have an airer similar to this one from Ikea http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/10225645/ only mine must have been the predecessor as it's in wood and cord. I bought it originally when I lived in an upstairs flat and it was great for hanging big things like sheets over the back stairs in poor drying weather. (You can fold it back against the wall when not in use but tbh I could easily walk underneath so just left it!. I use it in my utility room now mainly for shirts on hangers, jackets etc. Hope that's some help. :)

    Hi

I have got one of these 'Hangdroogrek' found it in a charity shop for a squid and its great. It sits on the bannister overhanging the stairs in the winter and on the back garden fence in the summer (when I only have a few bits saves getting the wirly gig out). I did a g**gle search and you can buy them or ask someone to bring you one back from a holiday.

    hope this helps....

If you have ever been on a caravan holiday, you will recognise these.

Just search where caravan/camping supplies are sold - its not just a Dutch thing

That's one way to get a concentration of damp air in one place and associated mould problems

Just because warm air rises, don't think that this is a good place to dry clothes. You need air movement too
