Closing Santander Account, quickest method.

I have a Santander current account, I just signed up to take advantage of the 5% interest. It's coming up for the year so might as well close it.

Anyone know the best, hassle free option? I see you can go into brand or do it by letter/post.

Thanks.
If I've help in anyway, please remember to thank me :-)

Personally I'd just write to them giving them a date by which you expect the funds to have been transferred. However, we're talking about Santander here...

I phoned them, all done in a few minutes and a cheque sent to me for the balance.
  • Personally I would transfer the money out though e-banking to your new account, then it doesn't matter how long they take to close it.

I rather that than wait for a cheque.

I agree, withdraw any funds in the account first. I have recently managed to close an account with Santander which I have been trying to close for nearly 20 years. I tried writing & telephoning, went into various branches, signed various forms and was told it was closed each time, only to then keep being told it hadn't been months/years later.
In the end I went into local branch and sat there until it was closed, I now have confirmation on a printout from their computer that the account is finally closed.

A colleague of mine also had problems closing her account. was told it was closed, then got a letter showing it wasn't - took her about 6 months to get it sorted.
Everything will be alright in the end so, if it’s not yet alright, it means it’s not yet the end

  • branch managers can close them fastest as long you get confirmation its fine
  • Yes, I transferred out most of the balance first, then got cheque for the rest + interest for the month.

This only works if you have an account without underfunding charges. Otherwise you're creating many more problems for yourself.
