Auto Windscreens in administration

Around 1,100 jobs are under threat after the UK's second largest windscreen repair and replacement firm collapsed into administration.

Auto Windscreens called in administrators Deloitte after suffering trading and cash-flow woes.

The majority of staff employed by the Chesterfield-based group have already been sent home while Deloitte holds "urgent" discussions to try to secure the future of the firm.

Deloitte said no redundancies had been made, but added it had asked employees to stop working as it was unable to continue trading the firm until financing is in place.

It has approached major customers in the hope of drumming up enough funding to be able to trade the company until it finds a buyer.

Auto Windscreens operates a network of 68 fitting centres across the UK, 550 mobile units, a distribution centre in Aston, Birmingham and a central call centre. The company, which has an annual turnover of around £63 million, is headquartered in Chesterfield.

They obviously didn't repair the chip in their finances and things just got worse.

Just the 1st ripples of the P45 tsunami washing away millions of jobs.

There will be just as many windscreens needing attention tomorrow as there were yesterday. So, probably, the remaining companies will need to take on more people to pick up the slack. It may not turn out to be as bad as it would appear at first sight.

Hmm, isn't MOT failure due to minuscule chip one of the 'nice to haves' England can't afford any more? Let's compare -

    India/China/Brazil/Russia - windscreen chips, ignore

England - Man A uses capital to buy into windscreen repair franchise. Lady B pays for MOT, failure due to tiny mark. B loses productive time to have windscreen repaired by A. A pays B using after tax income. B pays tax on income. Condem's squander tax on foreign aid to India/China/Brazil/Russia.

FACT - we can't run an economy based on cutting each other's hair!
  • I like Autowindscreens. I think they are victims of dodgy practices by the insurance companies. My story...

Mrs GG's car suffered a cracked windscreen on a Thursday. We phoned Autoglass who couldn't do the repair until the following Tuesday at a cost of over £500. Mrs GG needs the car for work and Tuesday wasnb't convenient so I tried Autowindscreens. They could do the repair on Saturday morning at a cost of £250 and they got the job. I had to pay them as they were not the preferred supplier for Tesco insurance - obviously too cheap and efficient.

To make it worse, because we hadn't used Autoglass, Tesco only paid £125 towards the repair which, afetr the excess was £50 short of the bill. It was in the (not so) small print but I'll nver use Tesco insurance again. We recovered the £50 and the excess from the cuprits so it made no difference to us.

The loss of my custom won't bother Tesco much but... every little helps.

See, more jobs under threat because of spending cuts.

How long before Ed Millipede blames the coalition government for this ?
