Tricky one (screen resolution)

Following one from my BAD_POOL_CALLER thread I have now reinstalled windows, using my installation cd.

Now the problem.

The resolution of the screen is set to 800 by 600 and that is the only size avaiable, otherwise i wouldn't need to be writing this.

Ok, so ive reisntalled win xp SP3 ive got one of those wireless ariel thingies in the pc as the pc is upstairs and the main pc is downstairs. So we use the wireless feature to get the internet, ive reinstalled the software for the wifi network pci lan adaptor, and run the application.

Now what appears is too big to fit on the screen. What i need to do is search for internet, which i have done, several comes up which must include my next door neighbours, thats beside the point anyway, my talktalk internet shows up then what i need to do to connect to the internet is put in my router password and press connect, and bingo the internet appears.

This is where im having problems. I can input the password as i can see that box, however if i press the 'enter' key on my keyboard nothing happens, i have to press the 'connect' button that is out of site.

What i can do is put my mouse on the 'page' if you like and hold down the left buttonand pull the page around, then I can see clearly the 'connect' button that i need to press. However, as soon as i left my mouse go the page kind of springs back to the middle covering up the connect button that i need to press.

ive tried everything in the settings on the desk top, right click the mouse, properties, dpislay properties, etc but cant get the resolution anythying other than 800 by 600. all my icons are 'normal' size and the other 2 options are large or extra large. no solution there.

If i can get my pc to connect to the internet i can run driver detective and install the drivers that will proberly solve the resolution issues.

Boy, im baffled here.

  • After you type in your password hit Tab and then Enter.

To sort out you res problem, find out your graphics card by running DxDiag.exe from Run... and it's under Display.

Download new drivers and restart. You should be able to change your size.

Yep, sounds like you need to download the graphics driver for your pc, sometimes doing a manual 'windows update' then choosing 'advanced' will show up new driver software (but not always) or get the driver from the manufacturers site or the graphics makers site.

    That should sort it out.

As for the wireless needing to be connected each time, there's probably an option to make your home wireless network the default that it always connects to automatically... try clicking the wireless icon and see if there's such an option.

  • If your PC was pre-built google for the model number/specifications from your other PC.

  • Did you try doing a Windows Update as suggested earlier, often drivers are listed and might be the quickest way to get it up and running.
