BBC Inside Out London - Pothole Damage

Hi there

BBC1's Inside Out London is making a programme looking at the damage potholes can cause to motorists and cyclists.

Have you damaged your vehicle, and attempted to make a claim against the council?

Please do get in touch.

Regards

    London is nowhere near as bad as East Yorkshire. They've had to replace a complete 10 mile stretch of A road due to complete failure of the surface this last couple of winters. Typical to find wheel sized potholes.

    Have tried to claim from Maidstone council but they aren't interested despite the pothole causing my tyre to blow out at 20mph and causing a leak of either brake or shock absorber fluid. Only happened yesterday so don't know full extent of damage yet but car is only 11mths old with 10k on the clock and the tyre alone will cost over £100 to replace.

    Perhaps the fact that its a "Regional" programme has something to do with it.
  • My local council states that it is possible to claim for damage caused by potholes, but the info they require would put a lot of people off bothering.

    the exact location of incident with reference to an adjacent building or landmark;
    a full description of the defect with measurements;
    the time, date and weather conditions;
    direction of travel, by foot or vehicle;
    sketch of incident location and photograph;
    detail of damage plus two independent estimates for repair (unless repair was required immediately, eg. broken windscreen).;
    why you believe the highway authority is responsible for the accident.
    proof of vehicle ownership;
    copy of current MOT and insurance certificate;
    date of last service;
    any other relevant factors.

    You can almost guarantee that if the car hadn't been serviced for over a year they would refuse to pay out claiming that this was part of the reason for the damage.

    Been back with tape measure & camera. It's over 48" long and about 7" deep. Going to take more pics tomorrow when hopefully the water will have drained away as just looked like a big puddle the other day.
