Radiator has started making one isolated noise

I have a tall, flat, vertical radiator kinda similar to this in style...http://www.warmrooms.co.uk/acatalog/Apollo_Vertical_Plan_Radiator.html ...except mine is stainless steel.
It's been installed for maybe 3 years now. It's recently started making a single loud noise very now and then and I'm not sure why.
The noise is very similar to the 'click' a washing machine makes after it's finished it's cycle and it's unlocking the door, only it's much, much louder. It just happens once then it's silent until the next time. Episodes seem erratic.
I wondered if expansion was the cause but why wouldn't it have happened from day one if that were the case? Also why would it be getting louder? (The rad is in the kitchen and we can hear it from the living room next door, over the tv.)
It doesn't seem to be coming from the valve but I can't actually pinpoint where it is coming from.
Also, not sure if this is relevent or not...we use the rad as a huge message board. We stick letters etc to it with magnets. Would that have any bearing?

Does it coincide with the boiler starting or stopping?
Have you bled it?
How often is it happening?
Does it stop if you turn the rad right off?
I can't see what effect the magnets might have. You could just take them all off and see what happens.0 -
I'm reasonably certain I'm correct in saying it's not linked to boiler starting/stopping but will pay close attention now to make sure.
Yes, been bled.Herman - MP for all!

Are you sure it is internal to the CH system? Could it be something striking a pipe?0

No it's definitely coming from the rad and not related to pipes. Thinking about it more, it seems to happen more when the room thermostat and the thermostatic valve on the rad is turned up and the rad gets hotter...which brings me back to the expansion thing, but I can't quite see what or why, iyswim.Herman - MP for all!
