Swiss Chard/Leaf Beet

Can I start these off indoors, in toilet roll tubes, before transplanting to the garden when a few inches tall?

I don't see why not. I've never done it, but it should work.

A few inches tall might be a problem though, as they have long roots, best to transplant them early I would have thought.

  • I always start off in seed trays, mainly so they stand a chance with the slugs in the garden! Providing they are transplanted and aren't allowed to dry out too much, they are usually happy and don't mind being transplanted.

  • Later in the season, when your Swiss Chard/Leaf Beet begin going to seed let them carry on growing. Then pick the bud stems that form, at about 1-1.5 inches long, blanch & refresh them & use in salads - they're great for colour, texture & flavour (& my neighbours always ask for more!)

But do pick them before the buds start to open - leave it that late & they start to get tough. (& the flowers smell awful - like rapeseed flowers)

    Enjoy!
