Can I start these off indoors, in toilet roll tubes, before transplanting to the garden when a few inches tall?

I don't see why not. I've never done it, but it should work.
A few inches tall might be a problem though, as they have long roots, best to transplant them early I would have thought.Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes.0 -
I planted some yesterday ,in plastic square seed tray thingy. Theres some from last year coming up in the garden too but I could dowith some more plants."The purpose of Life is to spread and create Happiness" :j0

I always start off in seed trays, mainly so they stand a chance with the slugs in the garden! Providing they are transplanted and aren't allowed to dry out too much, they are usually happy and don't mind being transplanted.
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Later in the season, when your Swiss Chard/Leaf Beet begin going to seed let them carry on growing. Then pick the bud stems that form, at about 1-1.5 inches long, blanch & refresh them & use in salads - they're great for colour, texture & flavour (& my neighbours always ask for more!)
But do pick them before the buds start to open - leave it that late & they start to get tough. (& the flowers smell awful - like rapeseed flowers)
Enjoy!0
