Wireless Connection Issues

I have a frustrating wireless problem I've puzzled over but I'm now a bit stuck.

Had a Netgear Router worked fine for years then suddenly started misbehaving, dropping wireless connection then Windows 7 would say wireless networks available but wouldn't let you connect until powered down router and reset. It was intermittent but since my phone as Mi-Fi worked fine eventually decided new router time.

Got a Belkin one and all seems fine, simple set-up and the connection between PC and Router hasn't dropped once from what I see. My laptop has 5 bars sitting here and the PC upstairs 4-5 bars whilst wi-fi analyser indicates good signal strength and no overlapping channels.

However intermittently again I'm having connection issues. This time it stays connected on the computer to the router and windows reports internet access but I either have pages chronically slow to load, or reporting server not found error 105 (on Chome but FF is the same).

My Xbox seems happy enough however and my laptop bar occasional slowness isn't bad. My PC is awful, 20 seconds to load google, despite at times my laptop and phone being next to it loading it in seconds.

I've tried a few things, changing channels, changing security, updating firmware- not a sausage of difference. Driving me insane- any suggestions folks for something I've missed or pointers would be greatly welcome :)

I assume it's not an option to connect the problem PC by cable rather than wireless.
If the PC has a wireless dongle (not an internal wireless card) you could try getting a USB extension cable, and putting the dongle on the end of it - to get a better position/height.
Also, do you have any dect phones near the PC, that could be interfering with the wireless connection.

Hi, yep cable would be too difficult to connect hence the wireless router.

PC has internal wireless card but I suppose I could bypass with a dongle which I have and see if it works but I suspect no difference.

There are phones in the house but issue happens when that phone is well away from PC.

I ran a Ping and Tracert on BBC and Google and the ping occasionally fails and the Tracert had a few stars about 8 lines down on both. I'm wondering if it is a more general Virgin issue, but that wouldn't explain the lack of connectivity when I do the 192.xxx whatever for the router.

Stumped. Will wait it out, might need to get my cousin round for fresh pair of eyes on this.
  • I had something similar with BT Broadband. I did similar and tried a different router as well but couldn't get rid of intermittent drops for no reason.

Switched to BE Broadband. Not had a problem since. So from my experience I'd say it was your ISP (even though I don't know why my ISP would cause my wireless connection to go down as it makes no sense!).
