Thick wall/cavity between rooms query

I've recently moved into a property built in the early 80s. Between one bedroom and another there seems to be a very thick wall between 3-4 feet deep. The wall protrudes into the main bedroom. Before I start making holes in the wall, does anyone have any idea why this might be or have seen something similar before?

Friends have suggested pipe work or a covered fitted wardrobe, but I'm not too sure.

Any ideas?

Unlikely to be anything else except a disused chimney. Have a look in the loft for confirmation of this.

as above. cant see it being anything else.
it would have to be a major size building to have a pipe service void that big!

Have a look in the loft, if you dont want to make holes in the walls you could make a hole in the ceiling above the void and see whats inside it.

What is the wall construction? Have you tapped it? Should be pretty easy to tell if its plasterboard or brick, or even find a concealed entrance/fireplace.

Thanks for all the replies. It's not the chimney as that's on the other side of the house. The walls are plasterboard and sound hollow.

The house was built as part of a development and considering it's age and style I doubt it would be a disused chimney/fire place.

I'll try to get into the loft and investigate.
