Changing bank accounts

I am currently with Santander - just had my statement that tells me that they will start charging me 50p a day for every day that I am overdrawn up to a max of £7.50. Some months that wont matter. I do have enough money coming in its just a matter of when it comes in and goes out so some days I am overdrawn as the DD has gone out before the money has come in or the cheque has cleared - all authorised overdraft and so far has cost me pence each month - they dont even seem to be paying me any interest on my balance any more! The last few months I haven't gone overdrawn at all. I have approx £1500 min going through this account. I am limited in my choice of banks as in a rural area - dont have co-op and dont want to do internet banking who would you suggest ? I have really got into this money saving so I want to make sure that I watch the pennies and not give it away to the bank if I don't have to.

  • Thing is, when yo say you don't have a coop or not into internet banking. Do you physically go into your bank all the time? If not, then not having a presence on the high street should not be a problem. As for internet banking, I guess it's not for everyone but you can almost do everything remotely from your computer or via telephone banking. Coop overdraft charges are 15.9% per annum.

    1. If you do have a sub Post Office or Post Office nearby, then you can use their Post Office counter service for a nunmber of different banks.

    2. You can find details in the leaflet from the Post Office called "Post Office Banking", (or something like that). Details are also on their website.

    3. From the list I would suggest the "Co-op Bank". I suggest this as they get 80% customer satisfaction in the polls. They are well liked by their users and are helpful on the phone. You might prefer one of the others.

Lets know how you get on.

If you want a bank to have a branch local to you (and not use the Post Office), which banks are in your area?

Many of the big banks apart from HSBC (and Natwest I think) now charge for overdrafts on the same basis as Santander (i.e. having a fixed daily/monthly charge) if you go overdrawn
