If I were to finance the exams, tutors etc myself? What sort of price would I be paying?

To become a chartered accountant you need to have a training contract with a firm recognised by the ICAEW. If your firm will not pay for you to sit exams (and I've never heard of this) you can pay for it yourself. Looking at the ICAEW website it looks like training materials you need will cost you around £500 in total. Exam entry were a min of £100 each (you have 9 exams to do). Tutoring is v expensive. I reckon you are looking at least £70 a day and you need around 12 days for each exam. So that will total around £7500 alone. You also need to buy some books (accounting standards book and tax book) anf these will cost you around £100. All this doesn't take into account the cost if you fail any exams either.
All in all I would say get a job with a firm that supports you as it is a v v v expensive business otherwise.0
