OK I have an interview at University next week, and I have to prepare an answer to a question posed.
The question sheet says a written response of no more than 250 words referencing relevant sources, which could include books, journals and web sources. Does this mean hand written, and are quotes and references included in the 250 words?
I am at the moment assuming that I can type the document, and that referenced definitely aren’t going to be included as I have referenced 4 or 5 texts – some of which have really long titles…
I don’t know about quotes, but ideas on a postcard please.
many thanks,

You are right to be word processing this and not to include your references in the word count.
Good luck with the interview.0 -
Direct quotes don't count towards the word count. If paraphrased then yes it does.
For example:
As studied by Fischer (2008) the suburban black population still experience high levels of segregation in comparison to other racial groups.
It has been shown that levels of suburban segregation differ by racial groups: "Blacks who have made the leap to suburban living still experience much higher levels of segregation than do other groups" (Fischer, 2008).
The former would all be included in the word count, but the latter only the first part would be.
Bibliographies do not count towards the word count. And yes, it should be typed.0 -
thanks - you both rock.

have lovely days.

Most unis require whats called Havard Referencing when writing assignments and essays. By referencing other texts you have read you can show you have understood the topic area and are aware of academic literature on the topic.
Referencing basically involves citing the author within the work ie Smith (2010) argues that ..... . Then having a full reference at the end.
Use this as a basis to structure the reference
-http://www.staffs.ac.uk/uniservices/infoservices/library/find/references/harvard/index.php
And use Google scholar as a way of searching for academic papers. However, quite a few you will not be able to access for free from home.
I doubt they will be looking for much, just that you have the ability to write something better than your standard A Level essay.0 -
What course is it you are planning to do? If its law it tends to be OSCOLA heres a guide http://www.law.ox.ac.uk/publications/oscola.php. and you would do your referencing with footnotes. On word when you want to reference something just go to insert - footnote - automatic its simple enough. Referencing is not included in word count.0

i type the body of the text in word but obviously the title got missed.
i'm currently struggling with the word count (250)... i've inserted a table detailing the rise in drug use across the UK, and that alone in 284 words.... aaargh!!!!!!!!

Tables don't count towards the word count either. It should be referenced though.0

Everything in brackets is not included in the word count so your references should not be included. I advise to make sure you devide your answer into 3 sections, analyse the question, give a critical review and a conclusion stating your final opinion. Type everything related to university and present it with a cover page. Good luck! 2014: £20 voucher from SurveyFriends, £10 cash payout from Panel Opinion too and working towards more from Valued Opinions currently.
2013: £35 and £50 vouchers from SurveyFriends! More than £15 made from other paid surveys sites (Yougov, Panel Opinion, Valued Opinions, Pinecone, etc.) Happy so far!0
