Help with overpaid tax.

Hi wondering if you could please help me.

I started a new job January 5th, handed my new employer my p45 from previous job around about end of December. We get paid from main office in Texas and they had not recieved my p45 in time for cut of period of pay so my tax code on my first months pay was BR.

Now Texas have confirmed they have recieved my P45 so my next pay should have my correct tax code. I was just wandering if someone can tell me when I will recieve my overpaid tax? I done a good search and a few websites are saying I should recieve it in my pay(hopefully February's) others saying it will be after April?

It was about £300 I overpaid so the sooner I get that back the better!

Any help is appreciated.

Thank you! x

I did not recieve the overpaid tax in my pay. Should I enquire about it or do you think I should recieve it after the year end in April?

It could still be in March's pay - depends on what the cutoff date for payroll in February was as to whether it got processed in time. And remember you won't get it all back - not all of it will have been an overpayment

    Worth asking

Did your payslip still have your code as BR or was there something different this time?

I just noticed this post sorry!

Nope my recent payslip now has my normal tax code on it. Was Just January's payslip had BR. Could really do with getting the tax back not sure whether to call HMRC or just hang on x
  • Did your P45 definately show a cumalative tax code? If not you won't get a rebate through payroll you will have to apply in when you get your P60.

First check part 1A (the bit you kept) of the P45 to see if it had a cumulative code or not. If it was cumulative there will ne no X in the box after the tax code in section 6 and figures will appear in section 7 and possibly 8 as well. If however it is a week1/month1 P45 there will be an X and figures will only appear in section 8 only.

If it is a week1/month1 P45 then your employer is waiting on the tax office for details.

If it is cumulative either your employer has not applied the code or no tax rebate was due. Cannot be certain about a tax rebate without full pay and tax details from P45 and payslips.

Thanks very much for your replies, I will check my copy of P45 tonight and post a reply tomorrow, i'm at work at the moment.
    Thanks again x

Ok my P45 has an X in the week1/month1 box under my tax code and it has no figures in section 7 but does have figures in section 8.

Does this mean my work are awaiting something before paying back my tax? The works payroll dept is in Texas so makes it hard to speak to someone regarding this, I just want my tax back haha.

Thanks for the help so far xxx
